Exploring the Science Center

The Science Center was a blast. After the Legislative Building we traveled by bus to the Science Center and had a picnic lunch. After we all ate, we gathered around for a read aloud. We played at the park at the Science Center and it was awesome. It was a very busy playground because there were lots of other schools there! When we were there, we broke up into groups to explore the Science Center. We learned lots of new stuff and there was a lot of things to play with. One of the displays had us make our own energy. Pedaling a bike to 50 Watts was hard work! We went to a bubble display and got to make a big bubble around us. Some of us almost made the hot air balloon touch the roof! We thought playing the 3D hockey was fun. We got to see a stage show. The stage show was all about static electricity. A lot of people got to feel a shock. A lot of people had their hair go all crazy and stand up. If you wanted to you could shake your hair to make it go higher! There was also another stage show about tasting but we were having to leave when it was going on. One display tested our reaction speed. Some of us were good at it but it was pretty hard for most! The parents who volunteered were Mrs. Hilts, Mrs. Kurtz, Mrs. Kreiser, Mrs. Rathgeber and Mr. Schick. One exhibit let you climb really high up! One exhibit took a picture of our shadow. Another one showed your shadow as different colours. Did you know that light is not just white? It is made up of different colours. In the bubble station when you held the bubble up you could see a lot of different colours in it. There was a creatures exhibit with bats, frogs, salamanders, and snakes. One exhibit showed us tornado and lightning storms. We got to see all of the exhibits. There were so many exhibits it is hard to remember them all! At the end we were all sad that we had to go because it was soooooo much fun! It is a place worth checking out.

Legislative Building Tour

Yesterday we went to Regina on our field trip. Our first stop was the Legislative Building. We thought that the building was really cool. We learned that some of the marble used in the building is now extinct! Some of the pillars in the building weighed as much as 6.3 tons which is the same as an adult African Elephant. Before our tour we posed for some pictures pretending to be the Speaker. Our tour guided showed us the library. There are so many books and magazines there that they can't keep them all in one building. There were newspapers from all the small towns in Saskatchewan. There were more than half a million books! We saw old electric clocks that cost three thousand dollars when they were bought. There used to be 6 but one was lost and one was stolen. We saw some old paintings. One on the north wall was a painting of Saskatchewan's north and the one on the south wall was for Saskatchewan's south! One was faded because people used to smoke there. The only way it could be cleaned off was with human spit! They couldn't use soap and water because it was smearing the picture. We saw the assembly room where they make the laws. The mace was there too! We got to go to a boardroom where the government has meetings. That is where our MLA met us! We even had our picture taken with him on the grand staircase. The carpet on the staircase was green because the government was not in session. When it is in session it is red! We had a great time visiting this building! You should check it out!

Pattern Puzzles

Yesterday in Math we learned how to play sudoko. Some people thought that it was hard but it got easier after a while. We got to do ones that went up to 4, 6, and 9. The ones that went up to four were the the easiest. The ones that went up to six were pretty hard until people got used to them.
To play sudoko, you needed to make sure that the numbers were not lined up if they were the same numbers. It was awesome playing sudoko! I hope we do it again!! Sudoko is pretty hard when you first play. We also figured out how to solve math patterns using pattern blocks. These ones were pretty easy too. Math is always fun Mrs. Ball!

Help Mrs. Ball By Filling Out This Survey!

Hi Parents!

At the March interviews, I had asked you if you would be willing to fill out a short survey for me. This survey is the same as the one that was sent out in November. It is 20 multiple choice answers that relate to your child and the communication you feel that you have with our classroom. Your answers are anonymous. The survey will help me to make changes to the way I communicate between the school and home. This year our class had focused on using our classroom blog as one tool that would allow communication.

Please follow this survey link to the survey. If you have any problems with the survey, please let me know and I will make sure that it gets working for you!

Thanks again for filling this out!

Dancing Popcorn

We did an experiment today to see popcorn dance. Before we could do the experiment we filled out our experiment sheet. We listed our materials, the procedure and then told our hypothesis or prediction for what was going to happen. We talked about our hypothesis before we started the project. The first thing we did is get our materials ready. We mixed water, vinegar and baking soda together in a jar. It created a special gas called carbon dioxide. Because we are learning about forms of energy in Science, we tried to explain how this energy was created. The carbon dioxide created bubbles. The bubbles stuck to the popcorn in the bottom and made them have kinetic energy. This energy and the force of the bubbles moved them to the top. When they got to the top, the bubbles popped and they fell to bottom. After a while there was less carbon dioxide. The bubbles started to get weaker and there was less force to pull them to the top.

Procedural Writing

What is Procedural Writing?
Procedural writing is when we write out the steps of how to do something. We use transition words such as first, next, then and finally to organize our writing and go to the next step. Procedural writing can show you how something works or how to do something. In these pictures we were creating procedural writing to show decorate a tree or make a snowman.

Why Do We Do Procedural Writing?
We know that procedural writing is helpful to teach how to do things. Each grade in Davison School focuses on one kind of writing. The grade 4's focus on procedural writing.

How Often Do We Do Procedural Writing?
We do a procedural writing piece about once a month. Feel free to check out our "How to Make Popcorn" pieces of writing that are in the hallway right now. Mrs. Ball made some popcorn and we watched how it was done before we wrote out the steps. Mrs. Ball told us to watch carefully and not to forget any steps. We also ate the popcorn. YUM!
