Procedural Writing

What is Procedural Writing?
Procedural writing is when we write out the steps of how to do something. We use transition words such as first, next, then and finally to organize our writing and go to the next step. Procedural writing can show you how something works or how to do something. In these pictures we were creating procedural writing to show decorate a tree or make a snowman.

Why Do We Do Procedural Writing?
We know that procedural writing is helpful to teach how to do things. Each grade in Davison School focuses on one kind of writing. The grade 4's focus on procedural writing.

How Often Do We Do Procedural Writing?
We do a procedural writing piece about once a month. Feel free to check out our "How to Make Popcorn" pieces of writing that are in the hallway right now. Mrs. Ball made some popcorn and we watched how it was done before we wrote out the steps. Mrs. Ball told us to watch carefully and not to forget any steps. We also ate the popcorn. YUM!

  1. I really like doing procedural writing! I hope we do one this month! Was I using a thick marker becuse I remembered using a thin marker but in the picture of me it looked like I was using a thick marker. I was pretty sure I was using a thin marker because I only have thin markers. I remembered doing the procedural snowman writing. I think I like the popcorn writing better.

  3. I really enjoyed your pictures and the decription of what proceudral writing is. I think the combination of the two will really help your parents to understand what it is you are doing.
You are sure lucky your teacher lets you eat popcorn as part of your learning. I wish I had teachers like that!
