Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils Study Guide

The following are examples of questions that you need to think about when studying for your rocks and minerals quiz.  Some of the answers can be found in our duotangs.  Other answers will require you to think back to experiments, discussions and group projects that we have done.  Our test is this Friday.

·         What is a mineral?

·         What is a rock?

·         What are four characteristics or properties we used to study our rocks?

·         What are the three ways we can classify rocks?

·         Be able to tell me 2 things about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks.

·         What is a fossil?

·         How is it formed?

·         What is erosion?

·         What weather elements can lead to erosion?

·         What rocks and minerals are important in Saskatchewan?

Experiments in Social

Today in social we were talking about how people in our province survive our climate. We did an experiment to see if sod, fibreglass insulation, or saw dust would be a better insulator. Ethan brought in styrofoam forms and told us that houses built with them are 50% more energy efficient!

We celebrated Education Week with Buddy Reading with Miss Frick's Gr 2s!
Parents are invited in for an afternoon of learning Friday afternoon.

Mom's Pantry orders are coming home today.  ALL envelopes are due October 29th.
Today is Bus Driver Appreciation Day and it is Education Week.
Oct 17 is orange and black day.
New home reading sheet is coming home.

Monday at 1:00 we will have an education week assembly.  All parents are invited to attend.  There will be coffee and muffins served for parents.

A pumpkin fundraiser will be held at Davison next week.  Please think of purchasing your pumpkin through the school to make our playground accessible.  The costs of pumpkins are $5 or $10.  Exact change is appreciated.

Testing the properties of minerals.

We are talking about properties of rocks and minerals. Last day we talked about colour not being a very accurate way to name a mineral. Some minerals have many colors. Today we tested hardness with a steel knife, a penny and our finger nails.
